Zhu Yingtai was the only daughter of a wealthy family and was allowed to pursue scholarly studies disguised as a man where she met Liang Shanbo. Over the years the developed feelings for each other however by the time Liang Shanbo discovered Zhu Yingtai was a girl she was to be married off to a merchant s son. He fell in despair and later died. On the day of Zhu Yingtai s marriage she passed by his grave during the procession and begged for the grave to swallow her up so that they could be together. Both their spirits emerged from the grave as butterflies and they could be together forever.
